EVOA offers an unparalleled experience for bird enthusiasts, whether you’re interested in birdwatching or nature photography. With a network of photo hides and observatories scattered across its lagoons, EVOA is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the biodiversity of the Tagus Estuary.

From the variety of waterfowl to the ideal lighting moments at dawn or dusk, you’ll find everything you need to either capture or simply appreciate the natural beauty of this sanctuary.

Birdwatching

Birdwatchers can enjoy four observatories located across the three lagoons, each offering prime views of different species:

  • Main Lagoon: With diverse terrains, depths, and a variety of vegetation, this is the best location to observe the highest diversity of waterfowl gathered together.
  • Shallow Lagoon: The perfect place for watching waders in action, as they dominate this area.
  • Large Lagoon: In this lagoon, it’s common to spot large groups of ducks.

With over 5 km of trails, it’s easy to spend a relaxing day at EVOA, appreciating the richness of the estuary. The lagoons feature four observatories, three photo hides, and three additional viewing points available to visitors. For those seeking a more in-depth experience, we recommend a guided tour with one of our resident guides
, who will help you locate the most sought-after species and provide tips on the best times and locations for optimal viewing.

Nature Photography

Nature photographers will find EVOA to be a paradise designed specifically to capture images of waterfowl in unique conditions. We offer three photo hides specially built to enhance image quality:

  • East-Facing Hides: Two hides are positioned to the east, overlooking the Shallow and Large Lagoons. These are ideal for photographing in the early hours of the morning, taking advantage of the soft morning light. The proximity to the water allows for bird-level shots when the birds are resting, creating engaging and dramatic perspectives.

  • West-Facing Hide: A third hide is located to the west, offering excellent conditions for photography in the late afternoon, with proximity to the water and unique angles during the golden hour.

Photography Tip:
Combine the soft light of the morning or evening with high tide timing. Since the lagoons at EVOA are tidal refuges, many birds seek shelter here during high tide, providing incredible photography opportunities, especially when paired with the best lighting conditions.

For more serious photographers, we offer an extended experience, with access to the hides before dawn and until dusk, maximizing your chances of photographing during the best light. Click here to know how to become a member.

Additionally, you can reserve an exclusive photo hide at the Shallow Lagoon (5€/hour) for an uninterrupted experience.

For more inspiration and to exchange experiences, we invite you to join the EVOA Photography Facebook group, where you can view photos taken by other photographers over the years and share your own images.
